Student Exhibits

Students competed in two different shows: independent and competition challenges.

NEKL Independent Art Show: student(s) submitted artwork they have created in the last year that is judged for first place, second place, and honorable mention. Artwork categories include: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, computer graphics, photography, textiles, jewelry, and mixed-media.

Judges were asked to look at independent artwork for composition, craftsmanship, and creativeness.

NEKL Competition Challenges: student or teams of students created artwork based on ten different art challenges. Each school determined when and how students completed these challenges in their classrooms under direction from their art teachers. Some schools were unable to compete in these challenges due to circumstances related to this unusual pandemic teaching year!

The ten competitions were:

1. Spray Paint Pop Comic: taking inspiration from Lichtenstein, Stan Lee, and others, student(s) will create a comic book style pop artwork using spray paint, stencils, and drawn/painted details.

2. Poem Printmaking: Student(s) will find a short poem that interests them and will produce and illustration for that poem using a printmaking process of their choice.

3. Mixed Media Fiber: Student(s) will select a theme and produce a mixed media fiber artwork that embodies their theme.

4. Cut Paper Portrait: Student(s) will produce a portrait using only solid-colored paper through cutting and gluing. Portraits must be of the human-kind.

5. Sidewalk Chalk: Student(s) will select an art style and produce a symmetrical chalk design using that style.

6. Ceiling Tile/Canvas Painting: Student(s) will randomly select one famous artwork and one art style. They will then reproduce the famous artwork in the style that it is paired with.

7. Sticky Note Mural: Student(s) will create a wall-sized image out of sticky-notes. Imagery is required to be vintage or iconic in theme.

8. Recycled Animal Sculpture: Student(s) will use recycled/found materials to create an animal sculpture.

9. Clay Castle: Student(s) will create a clay castle. This competition is about sculptural qualities, not necessarily the projects ability to be fired successfully.

10. Opposing Clay Tiles: Student(s) will create two tiles that embody opposing themes. These artwork will be judged as fired and glazed works.
